The 27th July is a special date for two reasons, 30 years ago today our CEO Yogi Parmar purchased his first Salon Jagged Edge based in Liverpool. This shaped Yogi’s career and developed his hairdressing industry knowledge leading him to the role of CEO today at SalonIQ – providing the best salon management and marketing system to over 2000 salons.
9 year’s later Michelle Daly, who worked for Yogi from day one took over the Salon ownership, changed the name to The Base Hair Company and is now celebrating her 21 year anniversary! Michelle is an avid user of SalonIQ and the software has helped develop and grow her salon.
We caught up with Michelle to find out how Jagged Edge developed into Base Salon and what’s been happening over the past 21 years.
I started as an apprentice in Brian’s Hair and beauty in June 1988. I moved to his other salon, Jagged Edge in 1990 when fully qualified to take a stylist position. In July 1992 Yogi bought the salon and I was offered a job to stay with them.
It had always been my dream to own my own salon so in 1994 I took the decision to become self employed and stared my own mobile business. In 2000 I was ready to take the next step to look for a salon when I got a phone call off my sister saying she heard Jagged Edge was for sale! I contacted Yogi immediately and met him at the salon the next day. I felt like I’d never been away and I opened on July 11th 2001.
Yogi was amazing and was with me every step of the way even on the day I opened. When he had opened the salon his mum had blessed the shop with an Indian tradition and I asked if I could keep it as a good luck charm. The copper urn, candle and 50p piece still has pride of place in the salon and all team members know the story behind it.
It meant so much to open this salon as when I was a child I would walk past on the way to school and look in dreaming of my future. Choosing the name was really easy as I was going into a BASE after being mobile and also I was back at The Base where I started my career.
In 2014 myself and the team went to Pro Hair Live. We stopped at a stall called Passion 4 Hair and spoke to the owner Debbie Digby for a while. We were so inspired by the products and what they had to offer that within a month we had completely changed all our products. with continued support from Debbie and all at Passion 4 Hair the salon has changed immensely. We pride ourselves on using Vegan and eco Friendly products and as Passion 4 Hair provides an amazing education programme which myself and the team visit regularly in Milton Keynes as well as in house training provided by them we are able to provide the clients with an excellent service in salon and to continue at home with amazing products and advice. I feel continued education ensures we stay ahead in a fast moving industry. I have just completed the Hair and Scalp Practitioner course with them as I am very passionate about hair loss and thinning hair which I feel I will be able to help a lot of clients with.
We have a small team which consists of
Myself, Rachel who joined in Sept 2001, Caitlin and Mark. Caitlin and Mark both came from school on a work experience programme for 2 weeks and then came to do their apprenticeship with me. Caitlin joined in Sept 2011 and Mark joined in June 2017.
We are currently looking to recruit an apprentice as our next future professional.
Michelle’s the first day she took over Jagged Edge and the first day she started at The Base Hair Company
What we offer in our salon
We offer all cutting colouring and styling services and pride ourselves on maintaining condition and healthy hair throughout each service.
I work in the salon 4 days a week. The lockdown taught me how much I love my job and the salon. It is like my 2nd home. I honestly never feel like I do a days work in my life.
